Tale of Two Penalties as Spartans Beat BSC
BSC Glasgow 1 – 2 Spartans FC :: Ferrari Packaging Lowland League :: Indodrill Stadium :: 27th August 2016

Spartans goalkeeper Blair Carswell’s penalty save from Aidan Ferris helped visiting Spartans take all three points in Alloa on Saturday.
The BSC striker scored at his first opportunity from 12 yards in the early stages of the match, but a similarly placed penalty was stopped with BSC a goal down.
Trialist Dominic O’Halloran came in for his first start as Mark Adams named an otherwise unchanged side, with Ferris continuing up the middle.
The game kicked off at great speed, with both sides using the ball well on the excellent surface at the Indodrill. Jamie Dishington had a header go over after a foray forward and cross from full back by Eddie Malone.
After an impressive spell of possession in and around the Spartans final third, left back Gerard Traynor worked his way into the area, taking the ball past one defender before being clipped and taken down by Dishington. Referee Alan Newlands immediately blew up, and Ferris sent Carswell the wrong way to give BSC an early lead.
The visitors immediately pressed, with young loanee Shaun Bowers well placed to block a Jack Beesley shot from sneaking in at the near post, before Malone had a fizzing effort come off the post as BSC survived the onslaught.
Ferris and Jamie Cunningham both had shots go over from just outside the area as both teams continued to impress.
The visitors were level from a set piece. Robbie Duncan fouled Malone on the left, providing opportunity for Beesley to swing in a perfect cross. Paul Thomson was there to head home from a couple of yards out.
With half time approaching, O’Halloran and Cunningham combined down the left again, with Gary Redpath making his way into the area at the back post, only for the cross to be inches too far in front of him.
After the break, Spartans were in the ascendancy and Celtic loanee Broque Watson gave them the lead after ten minutes. The pacy youngster got down the inside right and fired a shot past Joe Wilton in the BSC goals.
With 25 minutes remaining, BSC were awarded a second penalty after an impressive bit of upper body strength from Ferris to hold off Alan Brown who eventually took him down from behind. The striker went the same way, however, and Carswell guessed right to gather the ball low.
Robert Jones, on a substitute, had an effort on the turn punched over by Carswell as BSC pressed the visitors in the closing stages. The keeper had to be alert to punch clear Tom Woods’ well placed corner under pressure.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for BSC and second placed Spartans continued their good start to the season with a narrow victory.
BSC get right back to it with a tricky away tie to Stirling University, featuring ex-BSC defender Michael Tuohy, to come on Wednesday night. The two sides played out an exciting 3-3 draw in the final game of last season’s Lowland League campaign.
