BSC Beaten by Spartans in Lowland League Cup Final

BSC Glasgow 0 – 3 Spartans :: Geosonic Lowland League Cup Final :: Ainslie Park :: Sunday 21st May 2017

Written by Sam Jenkinson

BSC Glasgow fell to a cup final defeat on Sunday at the hands of The Spartans.

Ross Allum got the home side off to the perfect start before efforts late in the second half from Blair Tolmie and Craig Stevenson killed off any hope of a BSC comeback.

Paul Keys came into the side as Stephen Swift named an otherwise unchanged side from last weekend’s triumph over Civil Service Strollers.

After a quick start to the game by Spartans on familiar territory, Allum took advantage of a defensive error to grab the first goal of the game. The striker just about sneaked the ball past Stephen Barr, with the keeper getting a touch on the low effort.

Minutes later, Robert Jones picked up the ball on the corner of the box before turning and firing across goal. It ended up in the back of Blair Carswell’s net, but the ball was adjudged to have received a touch inside the area from a BSC body and the goal was disallowed.

As BSC began to hold the ball more in the Spartans half, Lewis Bell looked to rise to meet Gerard Traynor’s deep corner but the Celtic loanee headed wide.

At the other end, some excellent defending from Keys denied Allum a second goal before the break.

BSC started the second half well, with Aidan Ferris denied after a deflection following a turn and shot, before Jones was played in by Riccardo Corrieri only to find his effort blocked.

With BSC beginning to dominate the ball around the hour mark, Ferris had a second opportunity following a corner routine but his shot from the corner of the six-yard box collided with a BSC body.

Ferris looked to be in behind the Spartans defence before he was pulled down by Chris Townsley, before the defender received a yellow card and the wall blocked Robbie Duncan’s effort.

Minutes later, Scott Maxwell swung in a free kick from the right, before Allum flicked it into the path of Tolmie to finish from a couple of yards out.

Substitute Blair Lyons dribbled past several Spartans defenders inside the area, but didn’t get his shot away from the left of the goal.

And Stevenson made it three after some excellent dribbling inside the box by Jack Beesley, before the ball rebounded out to the Spartans midfielder to slam home.

A late coming together saw three players booked before the final whistle went and Spartans were crowned winners of this year’s Lowland League Cup.

BSC will now have a month or so off before they return to prepare for Stephen Swift and his management team’s first full season in charge.

Team: Barr; Bowers, Bell, Niven, Keys (Toner, 74); Corrieri (Lyons, 62), Bembo (Woods, 81), Duncan, Traynor; Ferris, Jones

Not Used: Wilton, Malcolm, Nicol, Beckett
