BSC Finally Get The Better of Colts

Cumbernauld Colts 1 – 2 BSC Glasgow :: Lowland League Cup :: Broadwood Stadium :: Friday 28th April 2017

Written by Sam Jenkinson

BSC Glasgow manager Stephen Swift picked up his third win on the bounce as goals from dynamic duo Aidan Ferris and Blair Lyons were enough to see off Cumbernauld Colts in the Lowland League Cup.

A late penalty from Stephen O’Neill halved the deficit at the death for the home side, but BSC were not to be denied for their first ever victory over the Colts, setting up a quarter final clash against Edinburgh University at The Indodrill on Saturday 6th May.

Lyons came in for his first start under Swift as Stephen Barr returned between the posts, replacing Robert Jones and Joe Wilton who dropped to the bench.

Riccardo Corrieri also came in to the starting line-up, and immediately looked to get involved as BSC attacked from kick off. The winger found Ferris in the penalty area, who worked well to win an early corner. The ball was worked to Gerard Traynor at the back post, but the Cumbernauld-born full back fired wide.

BSC started well, getting forward quickly and threatening the Colts back four. Spencer Brown bought himself a bit of space on the left before attempting to find Robbie Duncan inside the area, but his glancing header went wide.

Craig Murray shot high and wide following some impressive passing put together by the home side in the BSC final third, before Lyons forced the Colts keeper off his line following a nice ball through by Spencer Brown.

Jamie Broadfoot and Sean Brown looked to threaten the BSC back four but couldn’t get clear attempts on goal as BSC continued playing with all of the confidence brought by their first two games under Swift.

Lyons threatened again, outpacing the Colts defence following a counter, but the BSC striker couldn’t get the ball to sit right and Fahey came out to claim the ball once again.

After an action packed opening half hour, the sides somehow went in goalless.

BSC started as they meant to go on in the second half, with Duncan, Traynor and Mark Toner having attempts at Fahey’s goal.

With the sides still level, Barr had to be alert to make a superb reflex save from O’Neill’s acrobatic volley attempt, clawing the ball wide with his right hand.

That proved to be a massive turning point in the cup tie as Ferris gave BSC the lead minutes later.

Brown pressed high up after a goal kick was taken short, stealing the ball on the left. The winger found Lyons cutting into the area, before he brought the attention of Fahey and laid it across to his strike partner. Ferris took his time before stroking home to put his side a goal up.

Lyons added another ten minutes later, with the striker showing impressive athleticism and skill to drive 30 yards with the ball into the box. He fired low across Fahey and in to double BSC’s lead. Traynor had another effort wide after pouncing onto a clearance inside the area, but he didn’t trouble Fahey as BSC continued to deny Colts any opportunities.

In the final seconds, sub Matthew Beckett was adjudged to have brought down a Colts attacker inside the area, with O’Neill calmly knocking home to give his side a chance.

However, it was the last action as BSC keep their season going and prepare to take on the students of Edinburgh University at the Indodrill Stadium next week.

BSC were victors last time the sides met in March, with goals from Ferris, Gary Redpath and Lewis Bell giving them three points at Peffermill Park. Swift and his coaching staff will be looking for a similar showing as they go in search of a place in the Lowland League Cup semi final.

Team: Barr; Bowers, Bell, Toner, Traynor; Corrieri (Keys, 74), Duncan, Bembo, Brown (Beckett, 84); Ferris, Lyons (Jones, 86)

Not Used: Wilton, Niven, Woods, Mansoor
