Jones Scores as BSC Share Spoils
Preston Athletic 1 – 1 BSC Glasgow :: Ferrari Packaging Lowland League :: Pennypit Park :: 6th August 2016
By Sam Jenkinson
BSC Glasgow earned their first point of the season after an exciting battle with Preston Athletic at Pennypit Park.
Mark Adams’ side had keeper Joe Wilton to thank as he made an excellent stop from an early Neil Shave penalty. The home side took the lead just after the break, but Robert Jones got his second goal in as many games to equalise.
Preston started off the game strongly and were awarded with that penalty after four minutes. A long diagonal ball forward found Gavin Stevenson in the area, who went down after contact by BSC left back Gerard Traynor.
Shave stepped up to strike, and a powerful effort towards the goalkeeper’s top right was punched away by Wilton.
BSC came into the game after the save, moving the ball quickly in the final two thirds of the pitch. Shave looked to capitalize on the space left at the back, but his run was interrupted by a late challenge by Matt Niven, who received a yellow card. Frazer Henderson’s free kick, however, missed everyone and went for a goal kick.
Traynor and Aiden Ferris, playing high on the left, combined well to allow the winger to find a cross towards Jones, only for the striker’s header to fly over the bar.
Full back Robbie Duncan got down the other side as BSC looked to get the ball into the area, this time finding Ferris at the back post who couldn’t get his effort on target.
As half time rapidly approached with the scores still level, a Preston corner led to a great BSC counter, with Jamie Cunningham and Ferris carrying the ball forward. The latter’s pass towards opposite winger Matt Beckett was well intercepted and the half ended goalless.
Preston fans were still returning to their seats for the start of the second half when Greg Douglas opened the scoring. He picked up a loose ball in the final third, before taking the ball past a BSC defender and firing home high into the net.
BSC looked to get right back into the game, again countering from a corner, with Beckett this time finding Ferris. He took the ball past keeper Bruce Callan, but some good defending ushered the BSC winger wide and he could only find the side netting.
They didn’t have to wait much longer for that equaliser though. Wilson slipped in the middle of the Preston half, which left Jones through to calmly slot through the legs of Callan.
Jones did well to get into the area down the right, but couldn’t find Ferris at the opposite post as BSC continued to attack.
Wilton foiled Shave again, with Douglas knocking a header back across towards the big striker, only to see his header clawed off the line by the impressive BSC stopper.
Adams’ team were in the ascendancy as full time approached, with Cunningham and Gary Redpath driving forward from midfield and pushing back the home side. After a few set-piece opportunities, BSC unfortunately couldn’t find a winner and the game ended even.
The games now come thick and fast for BSC as the Lowland League season gets underway. Two home games in the next week are the next challenge, with Edinburgh University first up on Wednesday night before the first tie against Lowland new boys Hawick Royal Albert.
