BSC Glasgow advance into the second round of the William Hill Scottish Cup

BSC Glasgow 1 - 0  Dalbeattie Star: William Hill Scottish Cup 1sr Round: Indodrill Stadium, 23rd September 2017

Lowland League leaders BSC Glasgow ground out a steely 1-0 win against Dalbeattie Star to advance into the second round of the William Hill Scottish Cup at the Indodrill Stadium on Sunday.

Gary Redpath’s second half strike was enough to see off the Star in a typically hard-fought cup tie as BSC extended their unbeaten run to ten in all competitions for this season.

From the start it was clear that Dalbeattie were well prepared for the game, looking to rectify the 4-2 home defeat that they suffered at the hands of BSC earlier on in the season.

The Star saw more of the ball early on which presented them with opportunities to unlock a defence that had only conceded six goals all season prior to Sunday. However, the Dumfries and Galloway side lacked the ruthlessness to finish their chances in a period which could have easily seen the Lowland League leaders fall behind.

BSC began to look more assured going forward as the half wore on, though, as they began to find a way through the resolute Dalbeattie defence. The best chance that they created was when Jack Smith found himself in space after a long ball from goalkeeper, Stephen Barr. The striker did well to turn the bouncing ball into a shot but it fell just wide of Vinnie Parker’s far post.

Despite beginning to get the better of the visitors as the interval drew closer, they could count themselves lucky to go in at half time at 0-0. A long ball over the top briefly had Tommy Muir in on Barr’s goal before the BSC keeper did well to deal with it only for him to play a very wayward pass, giving Muir a second bite at the cherry. BSC were relieved, though, when they saw Muir’s shot be deflected wide for a corner.

From kick off in the second half, it was clear to see that BSC weren’t keen for more of the same. The passing was slicker and the space began to open up as Dalbeattie started to succumb to the pressure from the Glasgow side.

Ross McMillan saw a header come back off the bar with Martin Grehan and Smith both seeing chances go to waste as BSC began to show why no team has beaten them so far this season.

The breakthrough finally came when a whipped corner from Stephen Murray was flicked on at the front post by Grehan to find a marauding Redpath coming at the back post to thump home. A just reward for a more dominant second half display from BSC.

In an attempt to salvage a replay, Dalbeattie began to claw their way back into the game but failed to turn their possession into chances. McMillan had his defence well drilled as they held back the waves of the Dalbeattie attack.

Substitute Aidan Ferris was unfortunate not to make it two at the end as good work from John Tenant played him in one-on-one with Parker but the young striker saw his shot flash just wide of the far post.

The second round draw sees BSC travel to Highland League side Buckie Thistle in what will be a stern test for the Glasgow side in their hunt for success this season. That will be played on 14th October with BSC returning to league action on Saturday with as they travel to middle of the table Gretna 2008.
